Anton Alvarez: Roman Toothpaste MMXXI

This summer Anton Alvarez will be creating an an exhibition for Vandalorum in Småland. The exhibition consists of monumental clay sculptures that are produced on site. Seven tons of stoneware clay will be produced on a scale that far exceeds that we know from the world of ceramics.

Fashion Forever at Sofiero Castle

The exhibition Fashion Forever – an exhibition about our times is being held on the exhibition floor at Sofiero Castle, with the rooms being divided into five different themes: New Fashion for Old, Innovation, Time for Creation, In Season, and Own Time, each of which are presented through the creations of both Swedish and Danish fashion designers.

Swedish Design Movement: Tarkett

Tarkett has made flooring in Sweden since the late 19th century, and the now international company is equally historic in France. Innovative design collaborations go hand in hand with the development of recycled and bio-based materials, and anything from scrapyards to sewage treatment plans form unexpected partnerships. Sustainability director Dag Duberg knows how to transform waste into raw material and make the flooring of the future out of materials that hold a past.

Swedish Design Movement: Swedese

Using moulded plywood, Swedese have not only created sleek design classics but also a manufacturing method that is resource-efficient from the start. Since 1945, their furniture has been produced in the Smålandian forest, and today in partnership with some twenty Swedish and international designers. From the factory in Vaggeryd, CEO Sonnie Byrling calls for more knowledge and regulations that force more companies to make long-term sustainable decisions.

Swedish Design Movement: Diemonde

”Made in Sweden” is written in many of Diemonde’s garments. Angelo da Silveira mixes global street culture with Scandinavian minimalism when he designs clothes for a new generation of Swedes. He gained his passion for fashion growing up in Örebro, to where he came as a political refugee from the West African country of Togo. Through his own factory Fugeetex, he fuses ecological, social and economic sustainability, employing the sewing skills of newly arrived refugees.

Swedish Stockings are a pioneer company who want to be mimicked in their sustainable production. Their materials in their shiny stockings include old fishing nets and plastic bottles. While her daughter Elsa-Li is fast asleep in the pram during our walk, founder Linn Frisinger tells me about her goal of changing the entire industry. Seven years after starting the company, she has come along well.

Japanese cabinetwork and architecture made to last for generations. Ola Rune likes projects that challenge both industry and craftsmen. He is one of the founders of the architectural firm ClaessonKoivistoRune, which began in 1995 as an interesting friendship, where friction whets creativity.

Swedish Design Movement: Emma Olbers

For furniture designer Emma Olbers, climate goals and knowledge form the basis for credible sustainability efforts. The desire to influence is translated through design jobs and activism, from well-considered material choices to Fridays for Future demonstrations. She speaks objectively about the need to tax carbon emissions and how designers do best in thinking backwards.

For Lammhults Möbel, quality and environmental requirements go hand in hand. In their production, brightly coloured interiors meet curvy tubular steel chairs made to give character and comfort to public spaces. Sustainability director Tilda Lagerqvist has many questions on her desk. From the qualities of recycled plastics to extending the life of our durable favourites from the past decades.

At the architecture firm Kjellander Sjöberg, shipyard ruins are converted into modern office spaces and London’s derelict industrial areas into waterfront neighbourhoods with social ambitions. One of the founders is Stefan Sjöberg, who designs tomorrow’s rooms and cities with demolition metal, a ruler and dreams.

The Kasper Salin Prize goes to the reconstruction of Kulturhuset

The reconstruction of Kulturhuset in Stockholm yesterday received the Kasper Salin Prize, the finest architecture award in Sweden. Responsible architect is Per Ahrbom, Arbom & Partner, and the city of Stockholm.

Stig Lindberg – soon at Millesgården

The multi-artist Stig Lindberg (1916-1982) has provided Sweden with art, utensils and designs since the 1940s. With enormous productivity, a desire to experiment and an ability to be a functionalist without losing his imagination, his design has filled thousands of homes over the past 80 years. In May his work will be on view at Millesgården in Stockholm!

Damn Critics! at Färgfabriken in Stockholm

In the exhibition Damn Critics architecture critics from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark write critiques of fictional works of architecture. The critical reflection departures in the critics’ own dreams and imagination. The written critiques are handed over to six designers from the three countries who generate form through model and drawing based on the critique.

Helsinki: Biennial this summer

Helsinki has high hopes for the summer. It is now announced that the city’s art biennial will take place on Vallisaari Island 12 June-26 September. 40 artists have been invited to create site-specific, temporary works on the island, in dialogue with the landscape. The focus is of course on sustainability. The biennial has free admission and is presented by the Helsinki Art Museum, curators are Pirkko Siitari and Taru Tappola from HAM.

The Kasper Salin Prize Nominees 2020

Today Architects Sweden unveiled the four nominees for this year’s Kasper Salin Prize for the best building of the year 2020. The prize will be awarded on March 25 at the Arkitekturgalan in Stockholm.

Stockholm Design Week: Verk

During Stockholm Design Week 2021 a new new Swedish furniture company was launched. Verk´s products are produced in Sweden and made exclusively from Swedish raw materials – from needle felt to surface finish – without compromising on comfort or design.

Stockholm Design Week 8-14 February

With full respect for our common responsibility to follow the guidelines to stop the pandemic, Stockholm Design Week takes place between Feb 8-14th. This year you can enjoy the design week in more ways than ever! Many of the activities will take place online during the week, while some welcome visitors in smaller groups or by appointment only. All with the same passion and focus on highlighting Scandinavian design.
